In law enforcement we talk about active shooters, active patrol, and active life styles. Too often however, we seem to treat learning as a passive activity, something that simply happens over time and too often only when we are assigned to attend training.
PoliceOne Columnist Dan Marcou delivered an outstanding talk on active shooter incidents, synthesizing and expanding upon his article Five Phases of the Active Shooter and his most recent, Three Dimensional Approach to Active Shooter Response.
The other day I saw an officer working a crash. He was able to talk to both drivers at the same time as he sat in the comfort of his patrol car. The drivers door was open allowing one driver to squat down beside him and the other driver was leaning in through the open passenger window. Perfect way to get killed. Get out of your car and hold a clipboard and use an old fashioned item called pen and paper. Or keep the drivers near their vehicles. Being lazy is going to make for more funerals. You young rookies and older “veterans” need to be aware of those around you. The officer told me he felt safe because he had been talking to the drivers a while. Ted Bundy made his victims feel safe too.
Firearms instructor Lou Ann Hamblin demonstrates a novel and effective technique to give immediate visual feedback to shooters using a simple cell phone to capture their technique.

Here are some things to keep in mind:If you have a computer or radio in your cruiser (as I’m sure most of us do), turn the computer monitor off and turn off or mute …
